Background StoryEdit

During his youth, DIO was hailed as one of the greatest brawlers of the universe. He is also deemed as the savior who, along with his friends, defeated the biggest and baddest adversaries that threatened the cosmos. After all evil had been quelled, DIO retired from brawling to live his life quietly. He married his long-time girlfriend and the two led a simple but happy life.

Their happiness was shattered on one tragic night when DIO's wife was murdered by two mysterious beings whom DIO referred to as the White and Black Devils. The White Devil murdered DIO's wife in order to provoke the Black Devil into settling their long-time woes.

With his wife's fresh blood flowing into his hands, DIO lost his mind and all reason. He started believing that if he can turn back time, he can find a way to defeat the devils and save his predicament. This subconscious plan which DIO had constructed under his insanity would later be the foundations of the Mephisto Brotherhood along with his underlying desire to become immortal and all-powerful.

By performing perfect BakuSynchro with the Perfect Core; DIO was able to return back to several decades in the past.

Appearance and PersonalityEdit

DIO's normal form appears as an older version of his present-day heroic self. He sports a predominantly black clothing to denote his alignment to the darkside.

In his God Form; DIO is an extremely tall man that towers at seven feet in height. He has long brown hair styled as if he was an evil emperor or mythological god. He wears a leather black coat to cover his body that was organically merged with the flesh from Judgment Dragonoid. His chest is exposed to show the Perfect Core embedded unto his heart.

Since the Perfect Core became his heart; DIO no longer bleeds and no blood is pumped into his veins; thereby stopping his aging process and making him an immortal.

When it comes to DIO's personality, he has a highly sexualized point-of-view on expressing his affection for his minions or to just about anything. He treats Gunz as his pet in a rather lascivious manner but disses him later in favor of Runo Misaki whom he later mutated into becoming his (semi)immortal paramour called "Anima Mundi."

Underneath the seducer is an extremely lonely egotist who gave in to the temptations of the darkside and lost all his sanity and reason. He lost his wife, the one who gives light to his life filled with nothing but sacrifice for the good of the universe. Thus, he could only conclude that he must destroy the universe as a payback of their ungratefulness.

Prior to Mission GrammatonEdit

"Kanbeki da ze... herein the quest for conquest and vengeance begins."

- DIO

DIO landed Planet Vestal where he met a fellow human; the Russian nobleman named Izaya Romanov. DIO, under the guise of being a benevolent man, was able to convince Izaya to help him finance the would-be Mephisto Brotherhood. In return, Izaya asked DIO to help him avert his grim fate which was told to him back on Earth by a fortune teller. DIO sensed this has something to do with the two Devils.

Izaya's wife soon gave birth to their son whom they named Yuri. The overjoyed Izaya also felt conflicted if he would turn against his contract with DIO or would save his family from the destiny that awaits them. During a very cold night; Izaya took Yuri to the Mephisto laboratories. Therein, he had the boy cloned. DIO reiterated that should Yuri display signs of becoming a devil, Izaya must kill the boy immediately and DIO would replace the original with the clone. Izaya nonetheless agreed.

For almost three years, DIO and Izaya were able to turn the Mephisto from being a small collaboration of two men to a true force to be reckoned with in the underground realms of Planet Vestal. Additionally, DIO is now an affluent man who now finds little to no use for Izaya. Yet, he still deemed Izaya as his friend.

Everything seemed well until a series of unfortunate events happened. Izaya and his wife died mysteriously during their son's third birthday and that one of the Mephisto's top scientists, named Antheus Michaels, turned against the organization.

It began when the Vestal scientist, Antheus, witnessed his wife and son being kidnapped by the Mephisto. Believing that Antheus' son was a Devil-to-be, the boy was taken into solitary confinement. The confinement drove Antheus' wife to insanity. She believed that if she were to serve the Mephisto in her entire life, they will return her son to him. The confinement unit, unable to contain the boy's overwhelming aura, soon exploded and Antheus was disillusioned. He believed that his wife and son were killed in that explosion; and he being the last survivor of their family, must avenge their deaths by opposing the Mephisto.

Antheus soon met-up with the orphaned Yuri. Together, they founded the Order of Grammaton to oppose the Mephisto Brotherhood.

When DIO discovered the existence of an opposing organization, he ordered his men to find and execute the leader.

When Antheus was found, arrested and tortured by the Mephisto; he confessed that he founded the Grammaton. He proudly declared that he had no regrets doing so as he is assured that someday, his organization will take down the Mephisto. As a Mephisto scientist threw a Vestal Deathball to the tied-up Antheus, the dying man telepathically told the then six-year-old Yuri to assume Fatherhood of the Grammaton as well as to escape to a safe place.

Yuri, unable to accept the loss of his second father, uses his dark powers to capture the soul of Antheus. As the Vestal Deathball absorbs Antheus' body into the dark whirlpool; Yuri tightens his grip on Antheus' soul. He then materializes the soul into the form of a Bakugan.

Antheus may have lost his body but his soul remained with Yuri. Feeling sincere gratitude and the love of a father to his son; Antheus swore to become Yuri's Guardian Bakugan and closest advisor. He was renamed Kain and he evolved into Aethereal Kain a few years later.

The Mephisto Scientists, unaware of Yuri's paranormal actions, reported that Antheus had successfully been executed. DIO nods in satisfaction.

During the time that the Battle Brawlers were busy quelling the forces of Naga and the Doom Beings; Grammaton was finally able to uplift its status into a powerful Organization. It began recruiting members starting with the renegade Brawler named Marduk Kreig.

Grammaton's Father later sent a message to DIO saying that the Mephisto's days are numbered. Angered by this, DIO ordered his godchild named Genesis Wright to join the ranks of the Grammaton in order to destroy the organization from within.

The Grammaton's Father, becoming curious with Genesis' similar appearance, recruited the latter and promoted him as the second-in-command a year later. This satisfied DIO.

Bakugan: Dimensional TroubleEdit

"I was a hero...but moreover, a pitiful sacrificial lamb of the universe. Now, I desire nothing but to destroy this ungrateful ocean of stars and worthless planets that had forsaken me."

DIO appears in Dimensional Trouble outside of his BakuSynchro form (which was called Deus DIO or Father DIO in Mission Grammaton). He battles the opponents with his Judgment Dragonoid and a flurry of powerful Pyrus and Darkus hybrid attacks. Despite being outside his feared BakuSynchro form, DIO is largely capable of casting powerful dark magic spells which can destroy disguises and cause imbalance in an entire planet's harmonious energy flow.

During DIO's first encounter of the reincarnated Vita Cleric, he introduced himself as Vito Faust and abducted the said Haos Brawler.

DIO's malevolent power had caused the Haos Brawler's true form to awaken. Later on, the sheerness of the power of the Vita Cleric had caused DIO to silently desire to obtain him.

DIO, as Vito, later revealed the truth to a horrified Dallas who also recognized him. Vito confesses that he is no longer fighting for the universe and is now going to destroy it because it had forsaken him and his happiness. Vito then leaves Dallas to ponder about what the latter had just discovered.

TriviaEdit

- DIO's characterization stemmed out from the author's pre-"Behind the Mask" speculation about Mag Mel's identity being Dan Kuso from an alternate reality or parallel universe. Eventually, Mechtanium Surge revealed that Mag Mel is a mutated Barodius and the author was utterly disappointed.

- In Mission Grammaton; DIO's concept as an antithesis of a main villain is also in opposition to Lync Volan being the primary protagonist and the implied fact about Dan's subsequent heroic exploits not being possible had it not been for Lync's sacrifice. Dan Kuso, however, still exists in Mission Grammaton as a relatively supporting character who leads the Bakugan Battle Brawlers Resistance in season one.

- Dio means "God" in Italian. However, DIO is always written in all caps because it is an acronym that means "Dan In Obscura." (Dan in the Darkness).

- Prior to being named DIO, he was supposed to be named "Vito Faust" after Don Vito Corleone of the Godfather due to the Mafia-like structure of the Mephisto Organization and Faust from Johannes Faust who made a pact with the devil named Mephistopheles. The name "Vito Faust" was eventually used for DIO's guise in Dimensional Trouble.
